Spring Fling Recap

We had a big crowd compete at the CrossFit Saint John Spring Fling on the weekend. Mike Jackson and Amy Wilkins hosted and with a great team of volunteers and judges put on a great event that ran like clock work and finished on time and maybe even ahead of schedule both days. Big thanks to them and their teams.

Our own teams were amazing. We had a pile of people head over to compete in the following divisions:

Scaled: Colette & Luc, Holly and Andy, Jaymee and Brett H, Katrina and Brett R

Masters:    Anne M and Mike I

    Rx’d:    Lori and Nigel

Day 1 started with the Thruster Burpee workout which was:

    Alternating Partners EMOM for 10:00

  •     5 Thrusters (95/65) (135/95)
  •     ME Burpees (on to a plate)

Scored by combined number of burpees

This was a burner with people going as hard as they could and then resting while their partner did the same. Seeing Colette flying through the burpees on the next platform certainly pushed me a lot harder. The plate required that you fully open your hips, knees etc. so that added a little challenge but everyone adapted.

The next workout of the day gave both team members 10:00 to establish a 1 RM Clean & Jerk, scored based on the combined best lift of the team members. This was a lot of fun to watch with some big numbers going up and a ton of PRs!

  •     Luc 10 lb PR
  •     Holly 10 lb PR
  •     Andy 10 lb PR
  •     Nigel 10lb PR
  •     Lori PR match
  •     Brett R 10 lb PR
  •     Mike I 5 lb PR

The last event of the day was the Sprint Chipper consisting of:

  •     50 DU’s
  •     40 Box Jumps
  •     30 Push Press (95/65) (135/95)
  •     20 Kettlebell Swings
  •     10 OH Squats (95/65) (135/95)

This left very little margin for error and transitions as people moved through it very fast. It was up to the partners to split up the work however they wanted. A single no-rep here made a huge difference but everyone from 782 looked great in their form with some showing big improvements.

Day 2 started at the pool. Depending on your division, this was either:

    Scaled/Masters 350m (100m minimum for each partner)

Rx 500m with poolside MU after each length (100m minimum for each partner)

This was tougher for some while others excelled. It did have the effect of shaking up the leaderboard significantly with a number of teams moving up. Jaymee and Brett H put on a great performance in the pool winning that event.

At the end of the pool event, two of our teams were now on top of the scaled leaderboard in first and second with our Masters athletes holding on to first place in a tie with a very strong team (Jeff and Lora from Maritime CrossFit).

We went back to CF Saint John for the last workout which was:

12:00 AMRAP Ascending Ladder, Alternating between Partners so that each do:

  •     3 Burpee Box Jump Overs (24/20) (30/24)
  •     3 Squat Cleans (95/65) (155/105)
  •     6 Burpee Box Jump Overs (24/20) (30/24)
  •     6 Squat Cleans (95/65) (155/105)
  •     9 Burpee Box Jump Overs (24/20) (30/24)
  •     9 Squat Cleans (95/65) (155/105)
  •     12 Burpee Box Jump Overs (24/20) (30/24)
  •     12 Squat Cleans (95/65) (155/105)
  •     15 Burpee Box Jump Overs (24/20) (30/24)
  •     15 Squat Cleans (95/65) (155/105)
  •     18 Burpee Box Jump Overs (24/20) (30/24)
  •     18 Squat Cleans (95/65) (155/105)

This was the toughest one of the weekend. (Personally, I was so happy to finish my sets of 15 and then watch Anne work on her sets as I collapsed … until I realized she was actually going to finish her sets of 15 within the time cap so I had to do more burpees.)

It was really impressive to watch the Rx’d teams get into the 15’s with heavier bars and higher boxes. Nigel and Lori crushed this but just missed the top 6 for finals finishing in a tie for 7th.

Katrina and Brett finished the regular WODs in first place and made the Scaled Finals. Likewise, Anne M and Mike I finished first in the Masters and made the Masters Finals.

The Finals were a 7:00 AMRAP of

  •     5 Pull Ups (Regular for Masters/C2B for Scaled/Bar Muscle Ups for Rx)
  •     5 Power Snatches (95/65) (135/95)
  •     5 Toes To Bar

The teams could split it up however they wanted. This was a flat out sprint with teams trying to break it up the best way that suited them.

At the end of the day, we had a couple of teams make the podium.

  •     Anne M and Mike 1st in Masters
  •     Katrina and Brett R 2nd in Scaled

They were actually tied for points but the other team placed higher in the finals. Another Islander, James Tremere from Court 6, was on the podium winning second in Rx with his partner from CrossFit Quispamsis.

Competing is not easy but it is a lot of fun … putting yourself out there can be nerve-wracking but what I love about it is the camaraderie that it builds among the members from our own gym and across the community as a whole. Celebrating these victories are what is important and you should all feel very proud of how you performed this weekend.

Of course, the best competition is against yourself and we get to do that every day at CrossFit with the support of an incredible community. Thank you to all of you at CrossFit 782 for being a part of it.

If you are interested in some comps, there is a growing list of competitions in the area. Feel free to come to our Comp Class on Sundays … we feel that this should be something everyone can do so it is included in your membership.
